“Don’t just work harder; work smarter.”
Ms. Theresa grew to love dance and theatre from a young age. After dabbling recreationally in ballet and dance during her childhood, she started attending Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts, a pre-professional ballet academy, at the age of 14. Under the artistic direction of Julianna Rubio-Slager, Theresa trained and danced the disciplines of vaganova style ballet, pointe, character, port de bras, variations, tap, and jazz. She attended summer dance intensives at Ruth Page Center for the Arts and Milwaukee Ballet. To accomodate for a rigorous training schedule, she was educated at home during high school. Upon graduation from high school, Ms. Theresa was granted a trainee contract with the professional company, Ballet 5:8, and performed and trained with the company around the country for two years. During her time with the company Ms. Theresa auditioned for and was granted spots and contracts for prestigious summer intensives including Joffrey Ballet Chicago, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and Texas Ballet Theatre.
Ms. Theresa has been instructing students of various ages for almost 8 years. Her area of expertise is classical ballet technique, but she has also taught jazz and tap. As an instructor, Ms. Theresa aims to view the student as a whole person, not just a dancer. She enjoys not just imparting the HOW of ballet technique, but the WHY, as well. Her pedagogy conditions the dancer for the rigors of professional dance, but also takes into account the unique limits and strengths of the individual student. Theresa began teaching at DanceWorX in January of 2017 and has found an amazing dance home through the studio. She currently attends the University of Mary and hopes to become a doctor.
